a bit of the new

Its been 4 days since we stepped foot onto the island we now call home. Its different here. Both Marsh and I struggled the first 2 days as we didn't have much going on here at the base and we have just come out of busy mode with packing, and camp, so it was hard to slow ourselves down.

Its been a high of 32 degrees most days and super humid, you start to get used to always feeling sticky, and appreciate the wind coming off of the ocean. Marsh and I were talking yesterday about the wind, and its funny how it is one of those things that at home I find myself thinking, "stupid wind, making it feel colder than it is" and now here you are wishing and praying for wind the days with low or no wind are very miserable.

I have already had the longing for friendships from home, and the familiarity of home. I realize it has been less than a week being here but knowing that we won't be back for a while makes it all that much harder. People here are so great though. I have already felt were there will be strong solid friendships, and I am already thankful for them.

Students arrive on Tuesday, and our schedule goes into a whirl wind from there. As I was enjoying some time on the dock earlier I thought how it seems so weird to be asking for support and to be living in such a beautiful place. However it then occurred to me that we will be working basically 24/7 while the school is on for lecture for the next 3 months and then for another 2 months if we go on out reach. Although it seems like fun and games, and that we are living in a paradise, its really going to be hard, and stretching.

Perhaps I am being a little ridiculous when I say this, and yes I know that you are all thinking "What is she thinking" but I find this place, this land, beautiful yes, but there is something about watching the sun set over the prairie later into the evening, there is something about looking out and not just seeing blue. Side note, when we eat dinner around 6pm, we eat is almost darkness.. the sun had set here by 6:30-7pm, reminds me of B.C.

Photos will come soon. I promise.

Cheers
M
